Below are a few of the magazines I’ve launched or led, ranging from a distinguished, ASME Award-winning design publication, to two acclaimed city publications, to an NYU Stern Business School competition winner.

Escape Artist Magazine (Editor/Publisher/Designer)

As the editor, publisher, and designer for this thirty year old expat magazine, I was charged with a dual challenge. The first was to reimagine the editorial vision, and overhaul the design, and the second was to increase traffic and revenue by overseeing all strategic business decisions for multiple properties including the website, multiple weekly newsletters, and all social channels. The goal was to reposition the messaging to appeal to a younger audience by featuring content that focuses more on the romance, fun, adventure, and excitement of international travel and living.

Duties include planning and scheduling for all monthly digital issues, building a global network of contributors, fielding pitches and assigning stories, writing articles and headlines/subheads, publishing three weekly newsletters, overseeing design for all properties, and analyzing all data to build traffic and increase subscriptions.

Houstonia and Portland Monthly Magazines (Editorial Director)

In an ongoing and evolving consulting arrangement, I’ve had the great pleasure to act as the lead editorial consultant for the past three Houstonia magazines and the most recent issue of Portland Monthly. Responsibilities include overseeing content creation and development, print and CMS scheduling, and final design. Specific duties include top editing, assigning departments and features, writing headlines, subheads, and captions, and even getting the occasional byline. Particularly rewarding was having the opportunity to manage and mentor the small but talented staffs for both publications.

Print Magazine (Editor-in-Chief)

As Editor-in-Chief for ASME Award-winning Print, one of the most distinguished and longest running design magazines in the country, I was tasked with reinvigorating the bi-monthly printed piece as well as conceiving, developing, and launching a handful of new brand extensions.

These included the blog Imprint, which was an immediate hit with the the design community, reaching nearly 1 million Twitter followers in under two years. We also launched Print Publishing—our luxury book publishing division—featuring monographs from Chermayeff & Geismar and Mirko Ilic. And we started the first ever Color Conference as well as a number of design competitions.

FoST University Alumni Magazine (Creative and Editorial Director)

Every year the Future of StoryTelling (FoST), billed as the fastest-growing interactive and immersive storytelling festival in the world, invites a handful of well known artists, designers, performers, speakers, and overall creative types to Staten Island for a three-day summit. At the end of the weekend, each participant receives a gift, based on that year’s theme, commemorating the experience. In 2017 the theme was FoST University, so of course it made sense to send each guest a FoST Alumni magazine.

Shift (Founder and Editor-in-Chief)

Shift was more than just a magazine. It was a movement. A pop culture, environmentally friendly media group that included a monthly printed publication, a website, weekly newsletters, gift giveaways, and more. Shift combined the sexiness of a fashion brand with the wisdom and awareness of a socially conscious consumer to create a new kind of lifestyle information source.

The Shift business plan won the NYU Stern Business Plan competition in 2005 and $100,000 in seed money.

Hallmark Magazine (Creative Director)

Alongside Editor-in-Chief Lisa Benenson, I was asked to reimagine this lifestyle/shelter publication from one of the most prominent and oldest family-owned companies in America. After a handful of unsuccessful launches by outside media groups, Hallmark magazine was finally going to be produced in house by the creative people working out of the Kansas City headquarters.

As the creative director for this new version, it was my duty to rethink everything from font choices, to photo usage, to cover imagery, to department and features look and feel, and more.

Fusion Magazine (Creative Director)

Fusion was a custom publication created for mega shoe brand Reebok. The idea was to launch a magazine that captured the everyday workout regimens, eating habits and leisure preferences by the actors, musicians, and athletes who were endorsed by Reebok.

The look and feel for Fusion was young, edgy, and provocative with stories that were designed to appeal to an active and empowered millennial generation.
